We understand that deciding to have an abortion is a difficult decision, even more so if you’re travelling to another country.

We provide free counselling sessions to all Irish Women who have treatment with us. Our friendly team of professionals want to support you.

What is counselling?

Counselling is the process of talking through your worries with a qualified professional. It is a form of talking therapy that lets you discuss your feelings in a confidential and non-judgemental environment.

It is often easier to talk to a trained professional rather than a family member or friend, as they are not personally involved with your situation and will always have a non-judgemental attitude. All of our counsellors will support you and your views.

It’s important to know that counsellors don’t offer you advice, but instead help you deal with issues and realise your coping strategies. No matter what you’re struggling with, our hand-selected counsellors will enable you to make the best decision for yourself.

Do I have to have counselling?

No, you don’t have to have counselling.

It's only a requirement with Marie Stopes UK if you're under the age of 16.

Do I have counselling before or after my abortion?

We provide free counselling sessions before and after your abortion. If you decide not to go ahead with treatment, we will not charge you for any counselling sessions you have had with us.

What topics are discussed in counselling?

Our counsellors welcome you to discuss a range of topics including:

When and where can I have counselling?

You can have your counselling session over the phone, because we want to make this process as easy and as comfortable as possible for you.

Our friendly advice team will discuss your appointment time preferences with you.

How long is a counselling session?

Each session will last approximately 30 minutes. If you feel this is too much time, you’re more than welcome to shorten the session. If you feel you need more time, we can arrange another appointment with you.

How many counselling sessions will I need before my abortion?

Each person is different and so it’s hard to determine how many counselling sessions you will have, if any at all. If you do decide to have counselling with us, you may want to have a couple. Our professional councellors will work closely with you until you feel comfortable with your decision moving forward.

Will I have the same counsellor for all of my sessions?

Usually, yes as it can be beneficial to speak with the same counsellor although this is not compulsory.

Can my partner be present during my counselling session?

As the counselling is a personal session for you, we recommend that you attend the call or appointment on your own. However, if you’d like, you can ask your counsellor if you and your partner can be present.

I had an abortion with Marie Stopes UK years ago, can I still have free counselling?

Yes. There is no time limit on when you can have post-abortion counselling with us.
